Evidence-based practice

FL4K's pedagogy integrates the findings of published research in each aspect of our curriculums.

Proficiency-based

FL4K's entire Spanish programs are centered on the notion of proficiency-based instruction and measuring learning outcomes through oral proficiency (OP). In short, that means putting student communication abilities over linguistic "correctness". Instead of prioritizing abstract grammatical patterns that form large parts of traditional language learning programs, our platform drives our learners to understand and be understood. This indirectly also motivates progress by making the content more directly relevant to students' everyday lives. There is a large body of evidence behind the efficacy of proficiency-based curriculums, though very few current products on the market could be described as such.

Comprehensible input

The video series that provides the central storyline teaches language through comprehensible input (CI). CI is based on the input hypothesis — instead of directly being told what vocabulary or a grammatical construction means, learners acquire language best through targeted exposure to oral and written language in natural contexts. Analogous to how we learn our first language as toddlers, successful second language acquisition occurs at the subconscious level. Decades of research have demonstrated the efficacy of CI methods. We're also completely aligned with more recent research on optimal input and elaborated input.
